The Limb Fitting Centre was opened on 15th March 1991 by The Right Honourable, THE LORD HOLDERNESS PC, DL, Chairman of the Disablement Services Authority.

In 2002 the Centre started a support group for users and their partners.  Meetings were social events, often with a speaker to provide a focus.  The group was called Step By Step.

In 2006 Scott Richardson led the group to form a formal committee, providing a forum to be more involved with the Centre’s operations.

The Committee, named “Step Up” worked on various projects, including a DVD of information for the Amputee and starting a swimming club.

They were awarded “User Group of the Year” 2007, by the Limbless Association

In 2012 it was decided that the name Step By Step be dropped in favour of the committee section Step Up.  Step Up was then used for all.

In March 2012 the latest project, the Test Track Garden was opened.

Limb Fitting Service Praised as a Centre of Excellence

During the summer of 2012 a patient satisfaction survey which included 8 Limb Fitting Centres in London and the surrounding areas returned top scores for the Luton and Dunstable Limb Fitting Department.

Each of the Centres, that took part, sent 350 detailed questionnaires to a group of randomly selected patients. Our patients reported high levels of satisfaction in most of the items, and we achieved top scores in several categories.

The overall results placed the L&D as a close second.
